Pros and cons of storing password in text file

Social media platforms telling their users to have a strong password.Strong password should contain lowercase letter,uppercase letter,special character and numbers.It becoming difficult to remember password.Account with their password can be stored in text file.

Pros of storing password in text file-

  • Easy— Storing password in .txt file format is easy.It is simplest way to store password of different website.It can be done using copy and paste.
  • Backup—After creating many passwords for different accounts that are stored in a text file.Many backup can be done using simple operations like copy and paste.
  • No cost—Password managers require subscriptions that are costly.There are only internet browsers like Google chrome,Opera,Mozilla Firefox,etc. That store password without money.Anyone can create many text files and label them differently.
  • Updating and deleting of password—Due to human mistake,you can update and delete the password.After that you can save and store it securely.
  • Can be secured by storing at right place—The file that has many passwords can also be secured by storing them in the right folder and sub-folder.There is no secured way to store passwords and each has its own risk.
  • Can be transferred into another location—The file that contains the password of a different website can be transferred into another location for various reasons securely.
  • No need for memorization—To create a password you have to create 8 or more letters including uppercase, lowercase and special character.By the use of text files you do not need to memorize the password.To remember password is difficult task today.

Cons of storing password in text file

  • Unsecured—Passwords are stored in plain text that can be easily readable by unwanted human being.Hacker can steal the file by using different strategies and techniques.
  • Time consuming—You have to store many passwords into a single text file then it consumes time. Updating and saving passwords demands more time than password manager. Navigation between files requires more than saving.

Why is storing password in document/text considered unsecured?

  1. Passwords stored in plain text can be readable by an unknown person.
  2. The text file can be stolen by Hacker.
  3. The file can be corrupt.
  4. The antivirus can delete files.
  5. The location of the file can be forgotten.
  6. You accidently deleted that file.
  7. The text/document can contain an old password.
  8. Passwords can not be updated.
  9. If you put the password in unordered then it is difficult to search for the correct password.
  10. Duplicate copies present in those folders.
  11. You rename that file wrong.
  12. You copied the wrong password in wrong file.
